The Homestead at Mt Cardrona Station is designed as the heart of a premium alpine village — a place to begin and return to after days spent skiing, biking, working remotely, gathering with others, or simply unwinding. With facilities including a members-only lounge, gym, outdoor hot pools, sauna, ice bath, co-working spaces, and boardroom, the building required a robust commercial underfloor heating solution capable of supporting year-round comfort across a wide range of uses.
Location: Cardrona, OtagoThe heating design needed to complement The Homestead’s role as a refined resort facility: warm and welcoming for owners and guests, practical for everyday operation, and responsive to changing occupancy across lounge, wellness, work, and circulation areas. In a dramatic Central Otago alpine setting, consistent radiant warmth was essential to help create the relaxed, home-away-from-home experience promoted by Mt Cardrona Station.
Central Heating New Zealand’s commercial engineering team designed a low-temperature hydronic underfloor heating system using 2,700 metres of Multitubo PE-RT pipe distributed throughout the building. Four FAR manifolds were incorporated to support multiple heating zones, with Smart One thermostats enabling localised control for areas with different comfort requirements. Three 16kW Chofu air-to-water heat pumps were specified as the primary heat source, working with a 200L Fiorini thermal store to support efficient operation, stable performance, and dependable comfort.
The completed system helps The Homestead deliver on its promise as a place to relax, recharge and reconnect. Radiant underfloor heating provides gentle, even warmth that suits the building’s premium interiors and supports comfort after a day in the mountains, during focused work sessions, or while owners and guests gather in shared spaces. By combining air-to-water heat pump technology with a carefully zoned underfloor network, the solution supports efficient operation while maintaining the consistent comfort expected from one of Mt Cardrona Station’s signature resort facilities.
