Scapegrace Distilling Company

Distilling with underfloor heating

Spacegrace Distillery Underfloor

Situation

Award-winning New Zealand craft spirit producer Scapegrace Distilling Company has been constructing Aotearoa's largest-ever distillery which is scheduled to be completed in late 2023. The $25M development that sits on the shore of Lake Dunstan has been designed by world-renowned Cheshire Architects with sustainability at the forefront of the design and material selection process.

Location: Lake Dunstan
Main Contractor: Breen
Mechanical Contractor: Foleys

Approach

Breen Construction has been project managing this large build and coordinating the team of contractors involved. The first of two buildings- the Barrell Longhouse - will contain the head office, bottling hall, warehouse, and the first barrel room. "Each decision is an incremental step forward in our quest to eventually become carbon neutral and create a property that enhances the region," said Mark Neal Scapegrace marketing director and co-founder.

Foleys Plumbers were selected to work closely with Breen construction and provided the mechanical services package for the building. Foleys specified an underfloor heating system to serve the office space of the Barrel Longhouse and Central Heating New Zealand provided detailed design and materials selections.

Outcome

This system contains 1,500m of Multitubo PE-RT underfloor pipe powered by a 16kW Chofu Air-to-Water Heat Pump via a Fiorini 80L buffer tank. With the push for a sustainable build, our Chofu Air-to-Water heat pump paired with an expertly designed underfloor heating system will help reduce the carbon footprint of the development by achieving higher internal comfort levels with around 20% less energy than more conventional heat pump based heating systems. Underfloor heating is unobtrusive and provides radiant warmth to the office space achieving a more uniform level of comfort for all workers in the space.

Overall, the convenience of an electric heat source (Chofu Air-to-Water Heat Pump) coupled with the economical output of an underfloor system is highly desirable in residential and commercial spaces. We look forward to seeing Spacegrace continue 'Turning to the world of tradition upside down' with their award-winning gin in their new facility.
